What is exercise allowance?

Movement allowance is the additional space between body measurement and clothing measurement that allows for breathing, sitting and moving.

Glossary illustration for Motion allowance

Definition

It is part of the functional width of a garment. What can be distinguished from this is the design addition, which also deliberately creates a loose, oversized or voluminous silhouette.

In simple words

A garment can fit your body measurements on paper and still be unwearably tight if there is no allowance for movement. How much space is required depends on the material, cut and part of the body. Stretch partially reduces the need, but does not replace good construction.

What to pay attention to

  • Try sitting, deep breathing, arm raises, and long steps.
  • Check whether buttons, pockets and side seams pull when you move.
  • Distinguish the desired silhouette width from the minimum that your body needs functionally.

Common misconceptions

Movement allowance is not automatically oversize. First of all, it is the necessary width for normal body movement.

ESKYNA note

Fit doesn’t end when you stand - movement allowance shows whether clothing can cope with everyday life.
