What is pocket square?

A pocket square is a decorative cloth in the breast pocket of a jacket, blazer or tuxedo jacket.

Glossary illustration for Pocket square

Definition

It is visibly folded or loosely pinned and is often made of silk, linen, cotton or wool. Its function is stylistic, not hygienic.

In simple words

Pocket squares can add color, texture and a little contrast close to the face. They don’t have to match the tie exactly; an identical combination quickly looks like a finished set. It is often more harmonious to pick up a secondary color or material mood.

What to pay attention to

  • Choose folding and material to suit the level of formality.
  • Make sure that the cloth does not bulge the bag.
  • Pick up colors without copying a tie or shirt one-to-one.

Common misconceptions

The pocket square is not a handkerchief for use. For this purpose, a separate, inconspicuous cloth belongs in another bag.

ESKYNA note

The pocket square doesn’t simply repeat color - it connects the pieces of a look with a small, visible echo.
