Color & Color Analysis

What is Ikat?

Ikat is a dyeing and weaving technique in which yarns are reserved and dyed in sections before weaving.

Glossary illustration for Ikat

Definition

The pattern is created in warp, weft or both thread systems. As we weave, the dyed sections meet each other, often creating slightly blurred, vibrant outlines.

In simple words

The characteristic blurring is not a printing error, but part of the technology. Real ikat fabrics differ from printed ikat looks, where the pattern is only applied to the finished surface. Ikat has distinct traditions in different regions of Asia and other parts of the world.

What to pay attention to

  • Look at the front and back: With woven ikat, the coloring in the yarn is visible.
  • Pay attention to information about origin and a respectful approach to craft traditions.
  • Combine complex ikat patterns with calm surfaces to keep their structure legible.

Common misconceptions

Ikat does not simply refer to any fuzzy ethnic pattern. The decisive factor is the coloring of the yarn before weaving.

ESKYNA note

With Ikat, the pattern is planned before the fabric is created - its soft edges tell of the weaving process.
