What is lap seam?

A felled seam completely encloses the open fabric edges and is stabilized by visible stitching.

Glossary illustration for Fell seam

Definition

With a lapped seam, the seam allowances are folded into one another and stitched flat. This creates a robust connection that is clean on both sides without any exposed cutting edges.

In simple words

You know felled seams from jeans, shirts, workwear and outdoor clothing. They hold up well and lie relatively flat, but require more work and fabric than a simple stitch. The parallel stitching seams also become a visible design element.

What to pay attention to

  • Check whether the stitching seams are even and without waves.
  • Make sure that there are no hard lumps at thick intersections.
  • Evaluate the thread color because contrasting thread will clearly emphasize the seam.

Common misconceptions

A double visible stitching seam is not automatically a real felled seam. The edges enclosed inside are crucial.

ESKYNA note

The felled seam combines durability with visible precision - functional and design at the same time.
