Definition
Metameric color pairs reflect light differently, although they appear similar under certain lighting. A change from shop lights to daylight can suddenly show the difference.
In simple words
The phenomenon particularly occurs with dark, neutral parts or parts made of different materials. Black pants and a black blazer can look like a set in the store and have a blue or brown tone outside. Lining, yarn and outer fabric can also be affected.
What to pay attention to
- Compare supposedly similar colors in daylight and artificial light.
- Place set pieces directly on top of each other instead of just looking at them separately.
- Check especially black, navy, grey, white and material mixes.
Common misconceptions
Metamerism is not just a general change in light. What is characteristic is that two colors change their degree of similarity when the light changes.
ESKYNA note
What works together under a lamp does not necessarily have to work together in daylight.
