What is Oxford shoe?

The Oxford is a classic lace-up shoe with closed lacing and usually a clear, formal line.

Definition

With closed lacing, the side lacing parts are under the front vamp and only open to a limited extent. This makes the front appear smooth and compact.

In simple words

Simple black oxfords are one of the most formal classic shoe styles. However, color, leather, sole and hole decoration can change the degree. The closed construction often offers less adjustment to the instep than a derby and therefore does not fit every foot equally well.

What to pay attention to

  • Check whether the lacing can be closed without putting too much pressure on the instep.
  • Pay attention to heel support and enough toe room despite the slim look.
  • Choose the shine, color and decoration to suit the occasion.

Common misconceptions

Oxford and brogue are not opposites. An Oxford can be plain or brogue-perforated.

ESKYNA mnemonic

The Oxford has a closed, calm front - it becomes formal through construction and material.
