Color & Color Analysis

What is patchwork?

Patchwork puts different pieces of fabric together to form a new surface and makes connections visible.

Glossary illustration for patchwork

Definition

Pieces can be organized by color, pattern, material or shape. Patchwork is a real construction technique; printed patchwork look merely imitates the look of assembled pieces.

In simple words

In fashion, patchwork can appear artisanal, sustainable, bohemian, graphic or deconstructed. Many seams and material changes affect weight, drape and care. When it comes to residual materials, using existing materials makes sense, but this does not automatically make a product sustainable overall.

What to pay attention to

  • Check seam stability and the processing of the many cut edges.
  • Pay attention to whether different fabrics shrink and can be cared for similarly.
  • Look for a unifying principle in the color or shape rhythm.

Common misconceptions

Patchwork is not the same as a patchwork print. In real patchwork, the area consists of parts sewn together.

ESKYNA mnemonic

Patchwork turns differences into a whole - quality is reflected in how well the parts hold together technically and visually.
