Definition
It runs parallel to the chain and usually frays less than a cut edge. Depending on the material, it can be narrow, colored, printed or particularly tightly woven.
In simple words
The selvedge helps to identify the straight direction of the thread. In selvedge denim, it is deliberately used visibly, for example on a folded trouser hem. However, it is not automatically suitable for normal seams because it can be tighter and distort the fabric.
What to pay attention to
- Use the selvedge as a guide for the direction of the thread, not blindly as a finished seam edge.
- Check if it pulls the fabric together or is a different color.
- If selvedge processing is visible, ensure clean, symmetrical placement.
Common misconceptions
Selvage and hem are not the same thing. The selvedge is created during fabric production, the hem is created on the garment.
ESKYNA mnemonic
The selvedge shows how the fabric is constructed - it is only used visibly through a conscious design decision.
