What is gusset?

A gusset is an inserted piece of fabric that improves freedom of movement, shape or stability in high-stress areas.

Definition

Gussets are often used in the crotch, under the arm, on gloves or on bags. Their shape can be triangular, diamond-shaped or elongated.

In simple words

A well-placed gusset creates space without making the entire garment wider. With leggings or trousers, it can reduce tension in the crotch; On shirts and jackets, an underarm gusset makes it easier to lift your arms. At the same time, it distributes the load across several seams.

What to pay attention to

  • Check that the gusset lies flat and does not create any harsh seam crossings.
  • When it comes to sports and functional clothing, pay attention to soft, low-friction workmanship.
  • Observe whether freedom of movement really increases or whether there is just more volume in the material.

Common misconceptions

A gusset is not a repair patch, but is usually part of the construction from the start.

ESKYNA mnemonic

The gusset creates mobility exactly where a cut would otherwise quickly reach its limits.
